SlavicPunk: Oldtimer is an isometric shooter video game that draws inspiration from the works of Michał Gołkowski, a renowned Polish author of science-fiction and fantasy books. It is Gołkowski who created the captivating story of Yanus, a private investigator grappling with a troubled past. In the game, Yanus embarks on a mission to solve an unexpected case involving a stolen data carrier, all while battling his inner demons, urban gangs, and a powerful corporation responsible for the city’s downfall.

The game offers robust combat and movement systems, allowing players to navigate the dark corners of the city with a sense of authenticity and variety. Each encounter feels unique as players can customize their weapons through a modular upgrade system. The gameplay seamlessly blends action-packed levels with stealth elements, hacking, and environmental puzzle solving, alongside slower-paced sequences of city exploration, side quests, and storytelling.

As a development team, we pondered the question of what the world would look like in the future, specifically in a Central and Eastern European city. How would it differ from the iconic L.A. in Blade Runner or Neo Tokyo in Akira? This exploration greatly influenced the game’s artistic choices. From a mix of futuristic and outdated technologies, to the grim and brutalist architecture typical of post-communist countries, to the morally ambiguous decisions faced by the characters, and the rough and gritty atmosphere of an overcrowded environment where people struggle with the unequal distribution of resources and wealth, relying on their wit and luck to make ends meet.

The story of SlavicPunk: Oldtimer reveals that there is more to this dystopian future than meets the eye. It is up to the players to unravel the truth hidden beneath the neon glow and concrete streets, assisting Yanus in his final case and uncovering the brutal and ugly realities that lie beneath.
